If you work on a computer or spend a great deal of time in front of a screen, you may notice you experience eye problems at the end of the day as a result of the print on the screen. Fortunately for our optometry patients, you don't have to avoid work and fun to spare your eyesight from the effects of computer vision. We're able to advise you on ways to prevent issues with your vision while you're on the computer.
Computer vision is a term that describes vision problems that are usually temporary and are caused from being on the computer. It can occur from the print on computers, tablets, televisions and cell phones. It's a common problem. In fact, statistics provided by The Vision Council denote 65 percent of the 10,000 individuals who were surveyed experienced computer eye strain when using an electronic device. Moreover, the American Optometric Association states that of the Americans who work on a computer on a regular basis, over 70 percent experience eye strain.
Usually, people who experience computer eye strain will experience tired eyes. You might also experience symptoms such as the following:

Computer eye strain and computer vision syndrome arise from how the brain and eyes process the characters on the screen of electronics. These characters differ from print on magazines and books because the print on a computer screen isn't as clear. Physical print wording uses a very dense ink that has edges that are well defined. Words on a computer don't have the same degree of definition, so your eyes don't process it the same.
The blue light from the screen of an electronic device might also cause eye strain because it consists of very short wavelengths of light, which emit high energy. This kind of light is harder for your eyes to focus because it has a tendency to flicker more often due to its short wavelengths.
Make sure you take regular breaks from the computer every so often when you're staring at the screen for prolonged periods of time. Never sit too close to the computer screen because it will worsen the symptoms of computer eye strain. Always sit up straight and tall when you're at the computer. Keep the lighting in the room about the same as the lighting from the computer screen.
